05 Dec Blended Families-Simple Things that Bridge the Divide
On this episode of the “Covered” Marriage Podcast, we answer a letter from a new wife who is in love with her husband but her NEW family? not so much. Here’s the letter below and press play to listen to the advice we gave her!
Dear Kenyon and Taccara,
Can you do a show on Newly weds with kids from previous marriages?
My husband and I had sort of a whirlwind romance last year and, after meeting at a church conference, we were married in just a few short months. We’ve been married for 8mos. And Now that we are settling into the life of wedded ever after, and after introducing our children, I sometimes feel like I made a mistake. Don’t judge me please.
His daughters are disrespectful to me and my son. They refuse to address me by anything other than “your wife” to him or “hey dads wife” to me. And They refuse to speak to my son and lock him away as soon as they come around. I’m pretty thick skinned but my son is younger and innocent.
To add insult to injury, whenever I try to bring up the issue with my husband, he either says I’m too sensitive to what kids say or that I need to just give it time. There have been times where I would hide away and cry because I feel alone in this… me and my son. Before we got married, he promised me that we would build a life and family together and create a home with love a respect and boundaries but now I feel like he’s reneged on that promise.
He and I come from VERY different backgrounds and I’m really trying to create a new norm with our families but I feel like I’m working at this all by myself.
Kenyon, I know he respects what you have to say about marriage so I’m hoping you can shed some light here. If things don’t change, I’m afraid to say that teenagers will be the reason I walk away from a man that I love.
What should we do?
